Experience

Ilya Fedyaev is Counsel in the Moscow office of GRATA International. Before joining GRATA, he served as Head of Legal for Sony Pictures in Russia and the CIS, and earlier as Head of Legal for the largest theatrical film distributor in the region – a joint venture between Disney Studios and Sony Pictures. He also gained significant experience at the international law firms Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and Lovells.

Ilya advises clients on intellectual property, dispute resolution, customs, commercial and corporate law. He has extensive expertise in the film, media, oil & gas, and telecommunications industries, acting both as external and in-house counsel.

  • Advised a Russian investment fund on financing several major domestic films;
  • Supported a leading Russian/CIS distributor on co-production, licensing, and distribution agreements with top producers;
  • Reviewed chains of title for major Russian films;
  • Drafted copyright agreements for a renowned film producer with writers, directors, and actors;
  • Negotiated license agreements with cinemas across Russia and the CIS;
  • Represented a leading film distributor in more than 50 cases against exhibitors before Moscow Arbitration Court, with claims exceeding RUB 1 billion;
  • Represented manufacturers and distributors in customs, construction, tax, and bankruptcy disputes across Russia;
  • Acted for a Norwegian telecom operator in a shareholder dispute over control of Russia’s second-largest mobile operator;
  • Represented clients in appellate, cassation, and enforcement proceedings across multiple Russian regions;
  • Advised Russian producers and distributors on customs valuation disputes, including litigation strategies and preventive compliance measures;
  • Drafted marketing, advertising, and co-promotion agreements for a leading distributor;
  • Represented a U.S. multinational in Moscow office lease negotiations;
  • Advised a Russian oil & gas producer on contracts with international contractors for offshore production projects in the Caspian Sea;
  • Represented a Japanese steel producer in supply agreements for oil projects on Sakhalin Island;
  • Advised a film production company on a joint venture agreement with a leading Russian producer;
  • Played a key role in establishing the Association of Russian Film Distributors (AKD), including drafting internal regulations and ensuring compliance.
