Almat Daumov is a Partner and Head of Natural Resources Department of GRATA International. He focuses on energy and natural resources, M&A, tax law and dispute resolution.

For more than 13 years, Almat has advised domestic and multinational corporations and built an impressive oil and gas and mining practice. He has a great experience in undertaking and supervising work for oil and gas, mining and services companies, including Korean National Oil Corporation (KNOC), North Caspian Operating Company (operator of Kashagan, the world's largest oil discovery of the last 40 years), Sinopec, Rosneft, Baker Hughes, Enka, Polyus Gold International, Severstal, Nord Gold, Polymetal.

  • Advising Korean National Oil Corporation on exit from Zhambyl project in the Caspian Sea ($250 million investments exploration project): his responsibilities included supervising work on structuring a sale of a 27% stake in Kazakhstan's offshore Zhambyl oil block, drafting and negotiating with KazMunaiGas (Kazakhstan national oil and gas company) SPA and assignment agreement;
  • Advising (as Kazakh local counsel) KazakhGold Group Limited in a reverse takeover of Polyus Gold valued at approximately $10 billion;
  • Advising (as Kazakh local counsel) Polyus Gold International on its $9 billion premium listing on the London Stock Exchange;
  • Advising (as Kazakh local counsel) Polyus Gold International in the sale of $375 million of shares (including debt assignment) in Kazakhaltyn and Norox Mining (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan);
  • Representing Polyus Gold International on the investment dispute with Kazakh partners;
  • Advising (as Kazakh local counsel) Nord Gold, an international low-cost gold producer, a unit of Russian steelmaker Severstal, on the $1 billion IPO on the London Stock Exchange;
  • Advising (as Kazakh local counsel) Nord Gold in respect of the US Notes Offering for $500 million at the Irish Stock Exchange;
  • Advising Cammex (Kazakh large gold producer) on its $200 million sale to Verniy Capital and Kazzinc;
  • Advising NCOC (operator of Kashagan, the world's largest oil discovery of the last 40 years) on corporate and regulatory matters, state inspections, environmental disputes;
  • Representing Baker Hughes in its tax, customs and commercial disputes in Kazakhstan;
  • Representing Enka (Turkish construction conglomerate) in a complex $45 million dispute with a customer arising out of several EPC contracts;
  • Representing Sinopec Engineering in tax and customs disputes;
  • Advising Enka on corporate, commercial and other legal matters related to its investments in Kazakhstan;
  • Advising Korean National Oil Corporation in its M&A transactions in Kazakhstan;
  • Advising MOL Group on subsoil use matters;
  • Representing Maersk Oil Kazakhstan in tax disputes;
  • Representing Karazhanbasmunai (Kazakhstan large subsoil user) in a complex $100 million tax dispute (99% of tax charges have been cancelled).
