Belt and Road Summit 2026: Shaimerden Chikanayev on Central Asia and Hong Kong

Shaimerden Chikanayev, Partner at GRATA International[1] and a member of the Institution of Public Private Partnerships (IPPP), Hong Kong, attended the 11th Belt and Road Summit held on 9-10 September 2026 in Hong Kong.

This year's Summit ran under the theme "Advancing High-Quality Development • Embarking on a New Journey". It brought together government representatives, business leaders and professionals from across the Belt and Road region and beyond to explore new opportunities for international cooperation, trade and investment.

Over the two days, the programme covered a wide range of topics on cross-regional economic cooperation and business development, with particular attention to emerging opportunities across Central Asia, ASEAN and the Middle East. It also included the 9th Belt and Road Conference hosted by the Law Society of Hong Kong, which looked at legal innovation driving Central Asia's BRI trade, legal infrastructure development and cross-border dispute resolution.

During the Summit, Shaimerden, who is currently pursuing his PhD in Law at CUHK, spoke with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) about the growing mutual interest between companies in Hong Kong and Central Asia in expanding trade and cooperation, and about Hong Kong's unique position as a legal gateway for Central Asian countries.
